Sandy Ward  > Family > Birthday Delights
What fun this year in the days surrounding my birthday (July 2008)! No special plans in advance, but a good series of events and pleasures.

Sandy Ward > I was invited to sail with my friend Shemaya. Tentatively scheduled for July 9-15, which would have included my birthday, but she needed me earlier. I joined her in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay on June 29 for a WONDERFUL 5-day trip. See photo gallery.
Sandy Ward > Melinda Fields (left) hosted a Midsummer Bash to celebrate to celebrate 4 birthdays at once: hers, mine, and two "significant" birthdays among her band members, including Joe (on bass). A fun Balkan jam and potluck at her farm in CT; see photos of this party and her lovely garden.
Sandy Ward > My own garden is much smaller than Melinda's. I harvested the first tomato and squash just days before my birthday, and lots of lettuce. More garden photos. Ken gave me a significant new tool for yard work: a mulching lawnmower. I had requested a leaf shredder (to help prepare mulch), but together we decided the lawnmower was a better choice. It's electric and cordless -- recharges in the shed with our scooters.
Sandy Ward > The morning of July 10 was BEAUTIFUL! Ken had taken a vacation day from work and we headed to the Connecticut River with our guest Frank Nellis (Ken's former roommate with whom he had kayaked in the Yukon decades ago).
Sandy Ward > I rowed in the yellow Alden Star, a single-person scull that I often enjoy.

Sandy Ward > How's this for my view of the world as I turned 65?
Sandy Ward > Later in the day we accompanied Frank's 14-yr old son to a skatepark in Springfield, MA. After watching Guthrie skate for a while, we crossed the street to a tiny cafe and ordered DELICIOUS "Batitas" (milkshakes). Mine was called "Morir Soñando" (orange juice, milk, ice and sugar). Yum!
Sandy Ward > Then we walked around the sculpture garden in honor of Dr Seuss.
