Sandy Ward  > HFFPC > Hiking to a Vernal Pool
Holyoke resident Dan Overton invited HFFPC members and friends to hike in the woods by Holyoke Community College. He waded into a vernal pool and showed us some eggs laid by an endangered salamander species. A delightful walk on a 70-degree afternoon, Friday April 17, 2009.

Sandy Ward > Dan led us along a former Holyoke trolley line...
Sandy Ward > Tim enjoyed identifying some spring wildflowers along the way.
Sandy Ward > I enjoyed seeing a dark red Trillium blossom (left foreground) and lush green Skunk Cabbage along the creek.

Sandy Ward > We waited at a trail junction for Sarah and friends to join us.
Sandy Ward > Dan answered questions and then we walked UP the rocky trail (up slope on right) to a long ridge...
Sandy Ward > The view west from the ridge surprised many of us: this is a part of Holyoke few of us had seen or imaigined! Note the shiny line of the brook far below (center of photo). It kept sparkling at us as we walked along. In summer with leaves on these trees, we'd never notice that stream.
