Sandy Ward  > Libraries > Holyoke Public Library > Library Project 2010-11
A major building renovation/expansion project is underway. This album shows the condition of our building before renovation and chronicles the period 2010-2011 before construction. I thank Tom Ripa for leading many informative behind-the-scenes tours for Friends of the Library in January 2010. For additional photos from those tours, see Jeffrey Byrne's See the Brick: Holyoke's PhotoBlog. Public launch of the "Campaign for the Next Hundred Years" was celebrated June 2011. Groundbreaking occurred November 17, 2011. See separate album for photos of HPL Groundbreaking ceremony. This album ends on Dec 31, 2011, with an image from the 1910 era.

View from gallery of the murals about the main entrance: Allegoric History of Holyoke, Massachusetts. Painted 1943-1953 by Sante Graziani.
These murals were painted by artist Sante Graziani (born 1920).

A depiction of Captain Elizur Holyoke, who surveyed along the river (1640's), naming "Mount Holyoke" --according to legend. Two hundred years later, this "New City" was planned and then named "Holyoke", whether for the man or the mountain I've never been sure. Elizur's descendants moved to eastern Massachusetts, where I grew up hearing tales about Rev. Edward Holyoke (1689-1769, a President of Harvard) and son Dr. Edward Augustus Holyoke (1728-1829, a well-known physician).
Murals of early explorers, including Rowland Thomas, for whom Mt. Tom is said to be named.
In the 1990's the Computer room replaced the Cataloging and technical services area, which moved upstairs into what had been museum space. Metal stairs visible in that room once connected the Librarian's Office above with the staff work area below.
Mural about declining mortality rate.
Contrast of old and new methods of studying, January 2010. See closeup of mural in next photo.
"Urbs Holyokensis Condita MCCML" "Civico Regimine Donata MCCMLXXIII"

The Roman numerals indicate 1850 and 1873. Holyoke was founded in 1850 and incorporated as a City in 1873.
