Mari Castañeda, Assoc Professor of Communication at UMass, won the Antonia Pantoja Award and spoke of her connections to Dr. Pantoja and the oft-repeated phrase, "¡Sí, se puede!" [Yes, it can be done!]
See Wikipedia article on Antonia Pantoja
The audience included many community leaders and 10 high school students receiving LSA scholarships to help pay for college.
In turn, each student scholarship winner was called to the podium and congratulated. This is Misael Figueroa of Holyoke High School, who will be attending UMass.
Misael Figueroa thanked Holyoke for welcoming and supporting him.
A raffle for this Vejigante mask was held during the dinner. I don't usually buy raffle tickets, but for this good cause, I bought 10. I won it!
Now I'm learning more about the Vejigante tradition. See Caribbean mask, http://www.puertoricomasks.com/
